Interview with Les Mads

Yesterday I got the chance to chat with Jessie, the lovely writer of the German fashion site, Les Mads. We talked about our favorite blogs, places we like shopping in Berlin and gossiped about how the Sartorialist is dating Garance Doré(!) I had such a great time! Here’s an excerpt from our chat and check out Les Mads, they have an English site that is incredibly well written, and it’s full of fun fashion and street style!
1. Could you first explain when and why you started your blog?
It started as a way to put all the things I find online. I keep an inspiration folder on my desktop and it’s overfilling with things, so I thought I’d make a blogand put the images there and plus it’s just fun having a blog. I think it’s also a great way to talk to people about things you like.
2. What is your day-job?
I run Oh Leoluca, a shop on Etsy and I sell vintage clothing.
3. Describe your style. Where do you get your inspiration from?
I’m not quite sure what my style is, it changes so much everyday. One theme always is that I have to feel comfortable. I think I’m a bit of a chameleon as well, I move arounda lot and when I lived in L.A my style was more bold and messy. Now I live in Berlin and for some reason am going for more sophisticated, classic looks. Inspiration is a funny thing, because I don’t really have an inspiration when I get dressed. It’s like the other way around, I dress to express a idea or a feeling of a particular day. I think clothing can be such a tool sometimes. When I feel timid, I can put on military boots and feel strong. For me it’s all about how people see you and depending on your day, you can almost be like this undercover spy, you can become whoever you want with clothing.
4. Who are your favourite designers? I’m not really aware of too many brands or designers. There are the obvious ones that I think every girl likes (i.e Marc Jacobs). He has a sense that I really relate too. I enjoy fashion week but for some reason these names just don’t stick in my head.
5. Favourite Model? Kim Noorda is really charming, she has a great face.
6. Can you predict a trend that might be coming up in a couple of months? I think pastels are going to have their comeback. Lots of beautiful subtle colors, blues that are almost white, pinks thatare almost like a cream color.
7. Which item belongs in every womans closet? You know, my mom always toldme. If you’re going to be a lady, you have to have nice underwear. Haha, I think that is true. You should have beautiful underwear, it’s so easyto forget what goes underneath. Wear good underwear and the rest will be hard to mess up.
8. You can’t live without…
Good coffee and long breakfasts.
9. Your favourite book, film, song?
Book: The Little Prince- The story is so nostalgic, it brings me back to this nice part of my childhood that I forget. Film: Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I think every girl at one point or another has wanted to be Holly GoLightly. Song: Bob Dylan-Lay Lady lay. My favorite part is ” his clothes are dirty but his hands are clean and you’re the best thing that he’s ever seen. Lay Lady lay, why wait any longerfor the world to begin. You can have your cake and eat it too.” I love all his songs. This one just kills me, it’s like a love lullaby, I could fall asleep to it every night.
10. Where do you go shopping, what are your favourite brands?
I like getting my basics at AA. Opening Ceremony and Built by Wendy have some great pieces too. Everything else I buy is vintage.
11. If you had $1000 to blow on one item for fall what would it be? Would it have to be just one item? Haha, I don’t know, maybe I would buy a pair of Chloe booties.
12. What are your essential monthly magazines? To be honest, I don’t buy many magazines anymore. When I was younger I had a huge collection, but I get everything online. I do loveJapanese magazines though, they’re so cute and come with all these fun toys.
13. If you could raid anyone’s closet, who would it be and why?
Chloe Sevigny. She mixes vintage pieces so well and has a great eye for quirky accessories. Her line for Opening Ceremony is so chic.It would be a steal I wouldn’t regret!
Thanks again to Jessie!
